Petr Cech and fractured skull

Petr Cech 15.10.2006 underwent an operation on a depressed fracture of
the skull sustained in Saturday's English Premier League between Chelsea
and Reading. The Czech international collided with Reading's Stephen
Hunt in the first minute of the match and was immediately stretchered
off the pitch and taken to hospital.

According to an official Chelsea statement Petr Cech's condition is
improving. The Czech goalkeeper saw his first visitors yesterday, including wife Martina, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, and Chelsea captain John Terry, and could
be released from hospital next week.

The British media, meanwhile, is involved in a "merry-go-round of
speculation" about the seriousness of the injury. The most optimistic
scenario sees Cech returning to action in just six weeks; the most
pessimistic scenario involves a one-year layoff.

Quoting an anonymous Chelsea source, The Sun, a British tabloid,
reported today that Cech has had two metal plates inserted in his head,
similar to the sort normally used to treat victims of car accidents.

Encouragingly, Cech yesterday spoke on the phone with his agent, Pavel
Zika. According to Zika, Cech wanted to know the latest football news,
passed on his thanks to well-wishers, and said he was looking forward to
going home. According to info from latest news in Czech TV, he will be watching his Chelsea playing Barcelona today.

Meanwhile, doctors at the hospital where Cech is being treated have
confirmed that two metal plates have been inserted into the
24-year-old's head. The exact location of the plates hasn't been
disclosed, however, making it difficult to judge how long he might be
out of action.
