Complete UEFA Report:

FC Slovan Liberec held UEFA Cup holders Sevilla FC to a creditable goalless draw on the opening night of action in Group C - and they might even have come away with all three points from a game of few chances. The Czech champions enjoyed the better of the opportunities that were created with Jiří Bílek striking the crossbar midway through the first half and Petr Papoušek failing to make the most of a decent opening after the interval.

Ramos changes
Sevilla coach Juande Ramos made five changes to the side that lost 3-1 to FC Barcelona last weekend but the alterations seemed to have little impact as the home side matched their more illustrious opponents in the opening exchanges. With 20 minutes on the clock a good run and cross from the left by Peter Šinglár found Bílek, but the Liberec midfielder could only watch as his drilled effort beat goalkeeper Andrés Palop and cannoned back off the crossbar.

Pospěch shoots over
As the first half wore on, the game became gridlocked in the midfield area. However, it was the home side who again might have gained the initiative with some neat interplay just before the break giving Zbyněk Pospěch a clear sight of goal. The forward could only fire his shot over the crossbar, however, when he might have done better.

Palop save
The second period offered much of the same, with neither side willing to overcommit, although Liberec might have snatched a famous win midway through the half when Papoušek saw a close-range effort well kept out by Palop. The Czech side will hope to build on this positive start when they travel to Portugal on 2 November to face an SC Braga side beaten by AZ Alkmaar on Matchday 1. Sevilla, meanwhile, have to wait four weeks for their next match in the group and a meeting with Braga at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán.

Elections in Czech Republic

It depends on parties what they will draw from elections -- Klaus
Budapest- Czech President Vaclav Klaus told CTK today that it does not matter whom he will assign with the task to form a new government, indicating that the results of the weekend local and Senate elections will not probably influence his decision-making in this respect.

Elections result another loss of Paroubek's style -- ODS
Prague- The public rejected the confrontational policy of Social Democrat (CCSD) leader Jiri Paroubek in this week's local and Senate elections, Mirek Topolanek, chairman of the Cvivic Democratic Party (ODS) that won a landslide victory in both elections, said today.

KSCM does not support CSSD call, will support CSSD candidates
Prague- The Communists (KSCM) executive committee did not explicitly support Social Democrat (CSSD) head Jiri Paroubek's call for parties to join forces against Civic Democrat (ODS) candidates in the Senate elections second round, but will support CSSD candidates, Vojtech Filip said.

Election results do not change CSSD govt options -- Paroubek
Prague- The local elections and the first round of the Senate elections have changed nothing about the alternatives of negotiations about a new government which the Social Democrats (CSSD) submitted a week ago, CSSD chairman Jiri Paroubek said on Prima television.

Bem says constitutional majority not ODS strategic goal
Prague- Having a constitutional majority in the Senate is not the strategic goal of the Civic Democratic Party (ODS), its deputy chairman Pavel Bem said on Czech Television.

ODS wins local elections in Prague ahead of CSSD
Prague- The Civic Democratic Party (ODS) again won the local elections in Prague, winning 53.3 percent of the vote, followed by Social Democrats (CSSD) with 15.42 percent.

ODS wins local polls ahead of CSSD, KDU-CSL, turnout 46 pct

Prague- The local elections in the Czech Republic, held this weekend, were won by the Civic Democrats (ODS) who gained the highest number of votes as well as mandates in municipal assemblies.

ODS gains majority of votes in Prague, control of city hall
Prague- The right-wing Civic Democrats (ODS) were supported by 54.43 percent of voters in the local elections in Prague, thus gaining an absolute majority in the Prague city assembly and can rule alone, without a coalition partner in the capital.

Complete report from UEFA:

RCD Espanyol made a winning start to their Group F campaign by scoring two goals without reply at AC Sparta Praha.

Riera strike
Despite struggling for form in the Primera División, Espanyol made a bright start in the Czech capital and took the lead after 17 minutes as Luis García converted a penalty. Sparta were the dominant team from then on and the visitors had to survive some fierce late pressure before striker Albert Riera wrapped up the victory in the 85th minute.

Changes
Espanyol coach Ernesto Valverde made eight changes to the team which drew 0-0 at Villarreal CF on Sunday, fielding Walter Pandiani as the lone striker in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Sparta boss Michal Bílek also went for a new-look starting XI, making three alterations to the side which saw off FC Baník Ostrava 3-0 at the weekend.

Repka set-piece
García caused havoc from the off and soon won a penalty after a speedy break into the box was brought to an abrupt end by Michal Kadlec. The 25-year-old forward picked himself up to fire the spot-kick past goalkeeper Jaromír Blažek and into the bottom right-hand corner. The goal seemed to spur the home side into action and they immediately went on the offensive as defender Tomáš Repka went close from a free-kick.

Stout defending
The visitors had to defend stoutly to preserve their slender advantage as the interval approached, Miroslav Matušovič shooting just wide. Sparta began the second half in similar fashion, and were denied an equaliser three minutes in as Espanyol goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz repelled a Jan Šimák shot. The clinching second goal came against the run of play as Riera latched on to a Pablo Zabaleta cross and fired the ball low into the net.

Petr Cech and fractured skull

Petr Cech 15.10.2006 underwent an operation on a depressed fracture of
the skull sustained in Saturday's English Premier League between Chelsea
and Reading. The Czech international collided with Reading's Stephen
Hunt in the first minute of the match and was immediately stretchered
off the pitch and taken to hospital.

17.10.2006
According to an official Chelsea statement Petr Cech's condition is
improving. The Czech goalkeeper saw his first visitors yesterday, including wife Martina, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, and Chelsea captain John Terry, and could
be released from hospital next week.

The British media, meanwhile, is involved in a "merry-go-round of
speculation" about the seriousness of the injury. The most optimistic
scenario sees Cech returning to action in just six weeks; the most
pessimistic scenario involves a one-year layoff.

Quoting an anonymous Chelsea source, The Sun, a British tabloid,
reported today that Cech has had two metal plates inserted in his head,
similar to the sort normally used to treat victims of car accidents.

18.10.2006
Encouragingly, Cech yesterday spoke on the phone with his agent, Pavel
Zika. According to Zika, Cech wanted to know the latest football news,
passed on his thanks to well-wishers, and said he was looking forward to
going home. According to info from latest news in Czech TV, he will be watching his Chelsea playing Barcelona today.

Meanwhile, doctors at the hospital where Cech is being treated have
confirmed that two metal plates have been inserted into the
24-year-old's head. The exact location of the plates hasn't been
disclosed, however, making it difficult to judge how long he might be
out of action.

Tomas Enge second in A1GP Brno

Tomas Enge qulified at seventh place. Finished second.

Czech fans that had crowded into the natural amphitheatre surrounding the Brno circuit were delighted to see Tomas Enge secure the Czech team’s first podium finish of the season. Thanks to a slick tyre change on lap nine, the Czech was able to squeeze past Duran when the Mexican pitted two laps later. Duran pushed Enge hard to regain position, but the Brno specialist kept his line until the finish. “It was a strong performance,” Enge said, “I had to get used to the car again after so long away, I had to get used to a new engineer, but everyone did a great job and I’m really happy with the result. I don’t know if I’ll celebrate too much tonight though – it’s been a tough week!”

Double exchange rates at Prague City Centre

According to news on CT1 some exchange points at centre of Prague are behaving quite unfair. You see just a big sign, that tells you exchange rates have bigger ratio, than you will get when you try to change money. Where is the problem? The big sign doesn't tell you that you have to exchange "more than" 15 - 30.000,-, that is written on that small ones behind the door. So when you just want to change 100EUR you get only about 2.100,- CZK, but according to big sign you should get 2.800,-. There is currently no defense againt it and according to czech law it is not a crime. Be careful when exchanging money at street.
