Klementinum: Meteorological Measurements at Prague

Regular meteorological measurements at Prague’s Clementinum observatory began in 1752 and meteorological observations at the Clementinum continue until today – more than 250 years now. Although the Clementinum’s measurements were and still are influenced and distorted by a number of factors (such as the location of the measuring instruments within the Clementinum complex and its position in the very center of the city), for modern science, they represent a unique and extremely valuable source of information on weather and climate conditions during modern history.

Hard Saturday for Czech Team

It was terrible match. Watching our players, not runnig well, no offside system for our defense line no shooting power. What a shame. Ghana, a newcommer to World Cup beats second best team in the world. Unfortunately, it is our mentality - we know how to play against best teams, but we also usualy underestimate the not so good teams...

Lets hope we can prove we can play against good team - Thursday is the day.

How the match went:

2': Ghana got off to a fantastic start, scoring the earliest goal so far at Germany 2006. With just 70 seconds played a fine ball from captain Stephen Appiah picked out Gyan who took it under control beautifully on his chest and cracked home a low shot from just inside the penalty area.

3' Back came the Black Stars hungry for more and Matthew Amoah struck an effort wide from the edge of the penalty area after capitalising on slack marking in the Czech defence.

4': The Czechs sought a swift response but defender Marek Jankulovski, up supporting the attack, sent a low shot well off target from the edge of the box.

14': Far from overawed by playing a side ranked 46 places above them in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, Ghana went looking for a second and Appiah was close with a drive from 22 yards.

26': Ghana were continuing to cause problems for the Czechs and from a free-kick into his own penalty area, David Rozehnal sliced the ball over his own crossbar when attempting to clear.

29': Karel Poborsky – the only home-based player in the Czech team – had a clear chance to shoot inside the box but pulled a low effort wide of Richard Kingson's right-hand post.

34': There was a rare moment of concern for the Ghanaians as the ball fell to Tomas Rosicky, but his low shot was quickly charged down.

39': The game was being played at a fierce pace and Ghana created another chance with Appiah inches away with a low drive from the edge of the penalty area.

Ghana keep going:
46': In the opening seconds of the second half the Czechs thought they had found a way back into the game when Nedved headed in, but both he and Vratislav Lokvenc were offside the ball came in.

51': From a low goal-kick by Kingson, Gyan took control and ran straight at the heart of the defence, bringing a full-length save from Chelsea keeper Petr Cech – a clear sign that Ghana intended to carry on taking the game to their opponents.

56': A sweeping move brought the Czechs a chance of an equaliser, but Jaroslav Plasil shot well over from a narrowing angle when picked out deep inside the Ghana box.

65': Ghana swept forward into the Czech box where Amoah was brought down by Ujfalusi at the price of a penalty. Gyan stepped up to stroke the ball home, but referee Horacio Elizondo was busy showing the red card to the defender. He subsequently showed a yellow card to Gyan for taking the kick prematurely.

67': Gyan finally took the penalty but struck it against Cech's left-hand post.

73': Another great chance fell the way of Ghana, but Michael Essien delayed his shot a fraction and hit Cech with a low drive.

74': There was still a healthy pace to a really open game and Ghana were forced to defend, but not for long as they swept forward and twice in less than a minute Essien failed to covert eminently scoreable chances.

82‘: Finally a second goal did arrive as Gyan linked well with Muntari who blasted an unstoppable left-footed drive past Cech from 12 yards.

90': Two fine saves from Kingson deep in injury time prevented Libor Sionko and Jan Polak from scoring and set off wonderful celebrations in Cologne.

Czech Castles: Helfenburk

The castle, visible from a great distance, was founded by the Rožmberks in 1355, who then fortified its walls in the second half of 15th century. By the end of 16th century, however, they left the castle and in the course of next few centuries it had fallen to ruin. Its walls and buildings were partially restored in the 20th century. From the high round tower there is a fine view of the countryside and a look down on the fortification system is also interesting.

interesting fact about castle only in Czech

Czech Castles: Český Štenberk

This early Gothic castle, founded around 1240 is belongs among monuments, which have been named after and belonged, since their foundation up to the present, to members of a single lineage. Český Šternberk was conquered by the soldiers of Jiří of Poděbrady in 1467. The ruined castle was later returned to the aristocracy of Šternberk and they extended it in a ostentatious reconstruction securing the castle with powerful fortifications. The last significant adaptations took place in the second half of 17th century, when the original broken silhouette nearly disappeared.

During the tour you will walk through Baroque rooms with period furnishings of considerable artistic value, complemented with more recent furniture from the 19th century. There is beautiful Baroque stucco decoration in some of the halls (for example in the Knight Hall, see picture). Other rooms are dedicated to important representatives of the Šternberk family. Among the collections, one that stands out is a large collection of graphic sheets from the 17th century. Also, historical weapons and hunting trophies are exhibited there.

Czech Castles: Bucholov

Events in year 2006: VII. – Buchlov Theatre Summer (July 2006)

One of the oldest and most immense royal castles of South Moravia belongs among the most significant monuments of the Czech early Gothic. The last owners, in the middle of the 19th century already, opened the museum at the castle that the visitors may admire till today. Located in the historic interiors are natural science and egyptological collections, library and gallery.

The beginnings of this castle date back to the first half of the 13th century. Although the castle was the permanent property of the king until the 16th century, it was often given out to the management of noble families. In 1511 the castle entered private hands. From the 16th to the 18th centuries, the castle ownership was shared by the families from Žerotín, Zástřizl, and Petřvald.

Additional construction was made on Buchlov in Renaissance and Baroque styles. However, in 1707 a Baroque chateau in Buchlovice was completed, and the owners had moved there permenently by 1751. In 1800 the Berchtolds of Uherčice became the last holders of Buchlov. Under the auspices of two half-brothers Leopold and Bedřich, a family museum was created in the castle, which was opened to the public in the middle of the 19th century.
Today's interior furnishings, together with a collection of specimens from nature and an extensive library, document the evolution of interior design and lifestyles between the 15th and the 19th centuries. A visit to the castle may be combined with a tour of the private cemetery of the owners of the chapel of St. Barbora.

Czech Castles: Bouzov

Events 2006:
5.-6.8.2006 Fair and castle carneval

The woodland at Litovel is over looked by the Romantic castle Bouzov. The castle was built around the beginning of the 14th century, with the first known owner from 1317. Since the middle of 14th century until 1695 the castle changed hands several times.

In 1695 Bouzov was obtained by an order of German knights, but they did not take proper care of it over the following 200 years. Not until the decision of the order grand master, archduke Eugenius, did radical reconstruction take place between the years 1896 and 1901. The project, which was designed by professor George J. Hauberisser of the Munich Polytechnic University, was more or less respectful of the ground plan of old castle, but all similarity with the previous building finishes here.

The new structure, representing the late German Gothic style, abounds in projections, little towers as well as other, in relation to the rest of Czech architecture, very unusual elements. The castle as a whole, however, is an honored setting for film fairy tales.

The stately interiors of the castle are furnished with valuable historic furniture and old relics of the order. The dominant room is a pseudo-Gothic Knight Hall. The grand master's bedroom excels in splendid carved furniture and other works of art. Adults may climb a 61 meter tall watch tower.

Czech Castles: Bítov

The castle above the Vranov dam is marked by wonderful illusive paintings, natural science collections and a collection of weapons. The collection of fifty stuffed dogs, the largest of its kind in the world, is inscribed in the Guiness Book of Records. Apart from a small zoological garden, there is an exposition of ghosts at the chateau, a confectioner's and vinothéque.

Bítov is one of the oldest castles in our country. The castle was built at the time of the joining of the Moravian and the Czech lands. The first written references to the castle date back from 1061 - 1067. Until the turn of the 13th century, the castle belonged to the Lords and the castle was the centre of the administration of castles. In the region it also played an important part in the line of defence of the South Moravian borders.

The original castle was built of wood and covered the whole area of the promontory surrounded on three sides by the Želetavka river. The oldest well-preserved stone building is the residential tower, probably originating from the 3rd decade of the 13th century. The castle and its original buildings were, at the turn of the 14th century, rebuilt into a massive castle palace during the reconstruction which marked the passage of the Renaissance to Baroque. The first half of the 19th century became the last remarkable phase of the reconstruction, when the whole grounds, then under the ownership of the Earls of Daun, took on a new Gothic appearance.

Georg Haas, Baron of Hasenfeld, was the last owner until 1945. He was also the co-owner of the first Czech factory for the manufacture of china at Horní Slavkov near Karlovy Vary. It was he who changed the castle into a private zoo featuring a famous collection of stuffed animals including a collection of stuffed dods. In 1979 a complete reconstruction of the castle had begun. The endangered castle buildings have been secured and stabilized. New services built include an ecological and a biological sewage treatment plant. Alongside the reconstructions, the restoration of the famous illusion paintings has been carried out. Old furniture and facilities are being renewed and the zoological collection preserved.

Czech Castles: Bezděz

An order for the foundation of the castle, ruling the countryside around Mácha's Lake, was issued in 1260 by king Přemysl Otakar II. Czech sovereigns kept this castle in their possession up to 1420. Its importance can be illustrated by the fact that even in the course of the thirty years war, the commander Albrecht of Valdštejn ordered a Baroque bastion to be built in front of the castle. Since 1633 the castle premises served as a monastery, and after its abolition in 1785 Bezděz was abandoned. Since the middle of 19th century significant restoration projects have taken place on Bezděz, which has allowed the castle to have survived until the present as an excellent example of early Gothic architecture.

Sychrov Chateau

A large romantic chateau of the Rohan family from the late 17th century, originally a Baroque chateau built on the place of a Gothic fortress, adjusted in Classicism, in the 19th century rebuilt in the Pseudo-Gothic style. Authentic Neo-Gothic interiors with rich woodcarvings (P.Bušek) and valuable art collections (paintings, pewter, china, glass, glass paintings). The portrait gallery of the Rohan family is the most significant collection of French portrait painting outside France.

More than fourty halls and rooms with rich decoration are accessible in the manor. The decorations have been made by a number of Czech craftsmen of whom we shall name at least the carver Petr Bušek, author of richly carved panels of the walls and some of the ceilings. The Rohans collected an extraordinarily rich set of furnishings of which especially the paintings brought from France are of excellent quality. The portraits depict mostly the members of the Rohan family but also French nobility and even kings. The interiors of the manor are furnished by precious furniture and added by collections of artistic works and objects, especially china and glass.

Czech Republic wins 3:0 against USA

Our great strategy during the game won our team success.

At the beginig - it was 5th minute and Jan Koller scored by head.

Final score 4:2

The first opening match of the World Cup 2006 is over. Germany won 4:2 against Cost Rica.

Germany made the first step for the goal to advance to qurterfinals. It was very intereting game, even the secon half. Both halfs held 3 goals, which is a new record.

Watching Germany vs Costa Rica

Sitting in front of the TV, watching football and trying to loose some money on live bets. On of the best Fridays I can imagine.

Unfortunately second half of the opening match is not so exciting as the first one. And more, betandwin.com sustained some major problems during the first day.

I think that too many people were trying to place a bet too.

Vaidisova will miss the finals at Roland Garros

Nicol was already one set from win againts Svetlana Kuznetsova, but the 20 year old Russian unfortunatelly found the resources to post a remarkable 5-7 7-6(5) 6-2 triumph. Play was held on Court Philippe Chatrier and lasted two hours and 31 minutes.

This year of women finals will be Justine Henin-Hardenne against Svetlana Kuznetsova.

World Cup Begins

Today is the day. Germany plays against Costa Rica. After first half is the score 2:1.

But what is more important. For full motht will be something to watch on TV.

First games of the World Championship are not usually ofensively played and favorite team have problems. This match seems to be a little different. Germany scored first goal in 6th minute of play.

Costa Rica answered promplty, but it was not enough. Germany striked again.

Will Pavel Nedved play

Pavel Nedved sustained a possible knee injury during training and his start on the first match of Czech Republic is a question.

Injury happend after colliding with team-mate David Rozehnal.

"The knee hurts and that forced him to quit training," said Czech team physician Dr Petr Krejci. "We hope that it won't be anything serious and he will be fit."

Žižkov celebrates 125 years

Žižkov is celebrating its 125th anniversary of being declared an independent town in 1881. At the time, Žižkov, which benefited commercially from its proximity to the bustle of Prague, was the fourth-biggest town in Bohemia and being upgraded from village status was a source of pride for residents.

Žižkov is a cadastral district of Prague, Czech Republic. Most of it lies in the municipal and administrative district of Prague 3. Žižkov used to be an independent city until 1922.

The district is named after Hussite leader Jan Žižka. It was historically a working class district, and was sometimes referred to as “red Žižkov”, because so many of its inhabitants were members of the Communist party. Today, Žižkov is undergoing a mini-urban renewal, with many older dilapidated buildings being reconstructed and restored. Due to its specific atmosphere it became the Bohemian part of Prague with lot of artists living or performing there. Famous poet and nobelist Jaroslav Seifert was born and spent most of his life there.

Jan Koller will play for AS Monaco

Jan Koller ended his contract with Borusia Dortmund and signed a new one with French team AS Monako. As he said, he is very satisfied with the change. AS Monako should be the team to play for european cups and that suits him.

Vaidisova beats Mauresmo and will play against Venus Williams

A big surprise in Roland Garos Grand Slam by Czech player Nicol Vaidisova.

Nicol won 6-7(5) 6-1 6-2. Great performance.

"I was in my little zone," the Nicol. "It definitely felt great. I knew I had to be more aggressive than I was [in Australia] because she moves very well. In long rallies she definitely gets tough. I just wanted to play a little faster, get the points a little shorter. Definitely worked for me today. And I served very well."

Alois Hadamczik stays another two years

Coach of Czech national hockey team stays in function for another two years. Alois Hadamczik managed two major successes for Czech Republic. Our team finished second, while losing at the finals of World Hockey Championship in Riga and before finished third at Olympic games in Torino, beating Russia at the match for bronze medals.

Our team is newly build and that requires time, whitch was given to our coach.

Government forming negotiations

President Klaus today asked Mirek Topolanek, chairman of the election-winning Civic Democrats (ODS), to start negotiations about forming a new government.

Problem is one vote short for majority in lower house. Even when all mandates are added (ODS plus KDU-CSL and Greens).

Our present prime minister is unfortunately acting as a pampered baby. Shouting all over the media and threatning everybody. What a shame!

Škoda Roomster

This week, the the first Škoda Roomster cars are sold to customers.

The Roomster hit the world of traditional automobile design like lightning. Everything is different: from the sporty, yet emotional appearance of the car mask to the panoramic windscreen in the dynamic front section, the practical and spacious rear and the large side windows that provide passengers with a great view of the surrounding world.

There are numerous new and original elements in Roomster's styling and design, the whole of the dashboard, for example, while the traditional front grill in a chrome -plated frame with a logo on the top centre, powerful door pillars and tail lights with red contours are the Škoda trademark. Quite important for Škoda is the monolithic body structure appearing as one complete cast. There is no central hump and both the driver and the front passenger have plenty of leg room and an easy access to the rear seats. Sliding the rear seats of up to 750 mm you can load your luggage even between the seats! Folding the rear seats in their back position you can turn Roomster in a small van. The two lengthwise sunroofs are highlighting the generous, uninhibited and bright interior. In between the sunroofs there are the courtesy lights and air-con vents.
