Used car imports up 28.6 pct in Nov, new car sales drop

New passenger car sales fell by 2.2 percent year-on-year to 114,421 units in January to November, while imports of used cars rose by 28.6 percent to 168,840 vehicles, the Association of Automotive Industries has said.

Used cars accounted for nearly 60 percent of all passenger cars newly registered in the period,

The drop in passenger car sales was offset by an increase in sales in the category of light utility vehicles which includes adjusted passenger cars enabling buyers to deduct VAT.

Light utility car sales grew by 29.4 percent to 44,113 units. Overall sales, including passenger cars, rose by nearly 5 percent to 158,534 vehicles.

The top-selling car make in both categories was Skoda Auto with 47,803 passenger and 10,470 utility cars sold.

In the category of passenger cars, Renault came second with 7,622 units sold, ahead of Volkswagen with 6,709 units.

Volkswagen came second also in the category of light utility vehicles with 5,376 sold units, ahead of Ford with 5,001 units.

Lorry sales grew by 16.3 percent to 9,069 vehicles in January to November. Bus sales rose by 18.2 percent to 890 units, and motorbike sales were up by quarter at 18,844 units.
